As a board member of an educational non-profit, I had to address a meeting of our school teachers about some disciplinary issues. I started by looking around the room and saying,
“Thank YOU for being teachers. It’s people like you who have made me who I am, and you’re making a difference in many, many more lives every day!”
Smiles broke out all around.
The tone of the meeting was set in that instant.
I sincerely meant what I said. And realized something powerful…
Everyone wants validation and acknowledgment of their work. Even when it’s obvious and apparent. Recognize them, and you instantly engage and relate on a deeper level.
The rest of the meeting was a breeze 🙂
